Create Your Own Vessel From the Earth
We have a deep knowledge of vessels. After all, that's what we are.
Janet B. Reed will teach us how to weave our inherent knowledge of
vessels with materials such as willow and grapevine gathered from the
woods to create unique and beautiful forms. We will learn the
fundamentals of weaving
with fiber, apply adornments to
fit our personal style and fill our creations with keepsakes to take
home.
Janet has a B.S. in textiles and an M.S. in education. She continues
her education in the visual arts, teaches workshops and conducts artist
residencies. As an artist, Janet has explored the possibilities of
using fiber techniques to produce three-dimensional structures. Her
recent basket forms are respectful of traditional techniques but have
become forms without function. Janet has traveled to Japan and South
America and has been attracted to both the aesthetics of the Japanese
and the spirituality of Native Americans. These influences manifest
themselves in her work. She now lives in Traverse City, Michigan. Her
work is part of many private and several corporate collections.
Materials are included in this workshop.

Designing Silk Scarves: Removing color to Create Designs
Learn the art of creating one-of-a-kind patterns on silk scarves.
Several techniques will be used to both remove color from black scarves
(pictured) as well as adding color using the Japanese resist method of
shibori. You'll produce serendipitous results of pattern and color and
go home with lovely fashion accessories. In addition, Jennifer Gould
will
bring
some of her dolls and jackets for us to see, buy or ask questions
regarding her next workshops conducted at local guilds in the Midwest
and in her home.
Jennifer, a multi-faceted fabric artist in Byron Center, Michigan, has
been working in textiles since the 70's, designing wonderful
contemporary dolls. Many of
her painted and printed jackets are influenced from her studies in
Japan. 500 Handmade Dolls, a recently published Lark Book features her
extraordinary work. Jennifer of jennifergoulddesigns.com will show us how to tap
into our creativity with colorful fun and many uniquely beautiful, silk
scarves.

Exploring Landscape, Inside and Out
Do you love to garden but need more expert advise on how to design your
landscape? Would you like to have all your questions answered in one
comprehensive weekend? Then explore the interior and exterior processes
of landscape design with Julie Siegel of Jsiegeldesigns.com.
The archetypal land elements at the site of the Red Spirit Retreat will
enable us to look at our spiritual selves and mythic pasts both
individually and as members of a community. Our investigation will lead
us to address certain functional aspects of landscape design that we
can apply at home in our own gardens. We will also learn what to ask
when attempting to be active stewards of the land both publicly and
privately. For reference, please take a look at Julie Moir Messervy's
book, The Inward Garden: Creating a Place of Beauty and Meaning.
Fine Gardening magazine describes Julie as having combined her
background in dance, animation, architecture and writing with her love
of plants to create gardens that are full of energy and speak to the
larger regional aesthetics. Being raised by a photographer and a
painter guaranteed Julie's creative sensibility. Her decades of
teaching and public speaking developed strong communication skills and
independent thought. These have become essential tools for assisting
clients in transforming the abstract ideas that eventually become
manifest as landscapes. Julie's involvement with various community,
environmental, and social projects links her professional activity with
her humanitarian beliefs.
